About the Job : We are looking for an experienced Sr. Engineering Manager (full-time contractor) based in South America to join our growing team. In this position, you will lead multi-discipline engineers on one of our engineering teams - responsible for the AI/ML technologies powering Nerdy's learning delivery and operations systems. In this position, you will

  • Manage the operation and innovation of the technology platform for our AI and Machine Learning group (the lead Nerd for NerdAI). This includes leading a diverse group of software engineers, data scientists and machine learning engineers to deliver robust ML capabilities for the organization at scale.
  • Partner with Product and Staff Engineers to define & drive architecture and technology adoption at Nerdy. This domain is evolving at breakneck speed - this role requires vast intellectual curiosity to match the pace of play, and principled decision making to recognize hype from revolutionary breakthroughs.
  • Continuously improve platform excellence - owning observability and performance metrics, ever pushing the bar higher.
  • Providing guidance and supervision for technical architectures and systems design.
  • Overseeing our engineering staff's daily progress and development, setting objectives, monitoring their progress, and addressing any obstacles.
  • Constantly improving and optimizing your team's performance, both in terms of the individuals on your team and the systems they have created.
  • Above all, you inspire, mentor, and support the engineers under your supervision, empowering them to realize their full potential.

Qualifications:

Required Skills

  • Proven track record in Engineering: You have at least 5 years of successful leadership experience. Strong preference for leaders of ML, AI and Data Science domains.
  • Proficiency in designing and constructing complex yet efficient systems at scale.
  • Experience with monolithic and microservice architectures, preferably in a cloud-hosted environment.
  • Strong desire to learn and a passion for educational technology.
  • Demonstrated success in hiring and nurturing talented engineers.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with AWS services.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Knowledge of test-driven development.
