Wildlife Biology Internship in Costa Rica

  • Puntarenas
  • Wild Sun Rescue Center

Wild Sun is a non-profit organization in Cabuya, Costa Rica, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of local wildlife. We also work on reintroduction of locally extinct species.

Our 12-week internships are designed to benefit the animals in our care through data collection and research after their basic needs are met. Interns begin their stay at Wild Sun Rescue working alongside our volunteers (~40 hours/week, 6 days/week) to experience our routine work before starting their internship. Duties include but are not limited to animal care and husbandry related tasks (diet preparation, enclosure and equpiment cleaning and maintenance, collecting browse and providing enrichment).

About half a week is dedicated to the internship project, which may include field work or on-site projects. Wildlife Biology internship topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Behavioral observations of animals in rehabilitation or post-release (howler monkeys, scarlet macaws)
  • Data input and preliminary analysis previously collected data through Wild Sun Database
  • Literature reviews (local species, life history topics, growth charts, diet/nutrition, developing a food plant guide and local map of where to find them and information on phenology)
  • Evaluation of strategies and best practice protocols for rehabilitation and release
  • At the backbone of the internship program is a small research project, to be completed with a report written as a manuscript. This project gives the opportunity for individuals to practice their critical thinking skills and scientific writing, depending on the project some observation and field work skills, as well gaining experience working within wildlife rescue, while helping the rescue center through their own research.

Applicants must be at least 20 years old, able to work under sometimes difficult climatic conditions, and comfortable being on their feet for extended periods of time. Animal husbandry experience is valued but not required, as all volunteers and interns go through a formal training upon arrival. Prior experience in wildlife biology, tropical ecology, plant ID skills, statistics, field work, or related fields will be given preference.
