FIELD MEDIA INTERN

Summer 2023

Founded in 1994, Outward Bound Costa Rica offers a range of experiential education programs to high school, college students and adults that promise challenging physical activities across Costa Rica and Panama with a focus on personal development, leadership, and cultural immersion.

Our Communications Office is a collaborative team of three full-time staff members responsible for enrollment, marketing and customer service tasks organization-wide. Our team works to increase course participation across all target audiences and ensure excellent customer service—from prospective students, to families of students currently on course, to alumni and partners.

This position requires relocating to Costa Rica and moving into provided housing on Outward Bound

Costa Rica rainforest base for the contract period.

To intern at Outward Bound Costa Rica, you don’t have to be an expert in outdoor adventure or Costa Rica—in fact, we love people who are curious and eager to learn and we are happy to help you grow. But, we do look for driven and organized individuals who are not afraid to jump right in.

ROLE OF FIELD MEDIA INTERN

Your role on our team is to be a storyteller—editing and crafting compelling videos to share with thousands of our followers via social media, our website, and other creative avenues. This internship will provide you with invaluable content creation skills and will teach you how to strategically market video assets to an online following.

The months of June to August are our organization’s high season, during which approximately 200-300 students travel to and from Costa Rica to participate in our courses ranging from 1 to 8 weeks. You’ll be supporting the entire organization and will report to our Media & Marketing Manager and Director of Marketing & Communications.

Your role will be approximately 60% field based (joining program activities such as scuba diving, backpacking, and surfing) and 40% desk based, with responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Shooting video and photo content at OBCR course locations in Costa Rica and Panama.
  • Taking group photos and headshots of students attending course.
  • Interviewing students on and off camera.
  • Leading post production efforts from editing and audio to compression, formatting and exporting.
  • Uploading videos to certain posting platforms and drafting social media content to pair with the

video.

REQUIREMENTS - Demonstrated expertise in editing software including: Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects,

  • Photoshop, and Lightroom- Experience in smoothing and troubleshooting audio peaks, hiss and disruptions in post
  • production- Good photography and video production skill set with a portfolio of demonstrated work
  • Experience in leading a production workflow
  • Firm grasp of social media tools and platforms
  • Conversational Spanish skills
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Demonstrated interest in outdoor education and/or study abroad programs
  • An adaptable and positive attitude
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Willingness and ability to live and work in rustic accommodations with a small group of people
  • Past participation in an Outward Bound or other wilderness expeditionary experience (OB,
  • NOLS multi-day course or equivalent) is helpful- Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to

swimming, backpacking, rappelling, etc.

Outward Bound Costa Rica does not provide any filming or editing equipment, and you are responsible for bringing your own computer and software. This would include the following:

  • Reliable and high functioning laptop to allow for smooth video editing
  • Adobe video editing software
  • DSLR camera with video capabilities and lenses
  • Tripod
  • Audio equipment (on camera shotgun and/or lapel mic)
  • Waterproof casing and equipment

**COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • A monthly stipend of $450 USD
  • Room and shared kitchen on our main base (located east of San Jose in San Ramon de Tres
  • Rios) - all utilities included (water, electricity, wireless internet, laundry facility)- Access to approved Outward Bound Costa Rica course activities and equipment while on
  • location.- Travelers insurance for the duration of the contract period
  • Transportation, food, and accommodation at course locations.

NOTE: Airfare to and from Costa Rica is not included.

DURATION OF CONTRACT

We are open to individuals who can start in late May and are available until the end of August, 2023. We are open to negotiate start and end dates. Actual dates of arrival and departure will be agreed upon at contract signing.
